Due to the weather forecast saying the rain will change to snow and the temperature dropping, we will not have rehearsal tonight. They are saying the roads will become very bad due to ice and then a little snow and blowing snow. This is all supposed to happen around 6 or 7. That could make the drive home from rehearsal VERY bad, and due to the timing of the change in weather, I would rather play it safe and just not have rehearsal. See you Sunday!

New Year's Eve Rehearsal

Just a reminder that we have rehearsal on Saturday Dec. 31st from 8am-6pm. This is a very important rehearsal as we will learn quite a bit of the drill and the pit will essentially learn the show. We will break for lunch at 11:00. Lunch WILL NOT be provided for you, so you will need to leave and go get lunch. Rehearsal will resume at 12:30.

Now for the bad news. There was a great deal of confusion around the pay to play amount for winter drumline. The amount that I was told was $25.00 pay to play. However, as some of you have been told by the office, the amount is actually $50.00. I am VERY sorry for the confusion. The pay to play amount that needs to go to the school is $50.00. Going into this season I was really trying hard to not raise your total fees above $100.00. So I basically am running the winter season on $25 less per student this year. I was thinking that would keep your fee at $100.00 just like last year. However, since the pay to play amount is actually $50.00, the full amount you owe between the boosters $75 and the school $50 is now $125. Again, I am very sorry for the confusion and inconvenience. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

To summarize, pay to play is $50.00 and the amount owed to the boosters is $75.00

First of all, this is a reminder that rehearsals begin Tuesday Dec 6th. Pit will meet from 6:00-7:30 and battery will meet from 7:30-9:00. We also have rehearsal Thursday Dec. 8th at the above times.
Rehearsals for Dec. 13th and 15th are cancelled due to choir and band concerts.

The rehearsals on the 6th and 8th are VERY important as they will be the only rehearsal we have until our one day mini-camp. Our mini-camp will be Dec. 31st (yes New Years Eve) from 8:00a-6:00p. This rehearsal is also VERY important as we will begin to learn drill and the pit will get a lot of time to work on music.

Also a reminder that the first $25.00 that goes to the Boosters is due on Thursdays Dec. 8th. The remaining $50.00 for the Boosters is before our first contest. Also the $25.00 for the pay to play needs to be paid to the school prior to our first contest.

Thursday Rehearsals

Starting this Thursday, May 5th, the drumline will have rehearsal every Thursday through May from 7-9p. These rehearsals are NOT optional! If you have a conflict you need to speak with me ASAP. We only have a few rehearsals to get ready for the Memorial Day parade and the Strawberry Festival Parade.

We have a lot of work to do in about 4 rehearsals. The warmups have changed this year also. Therefore it is very important that we have everyone at these rehearsals.

I am currently putting the June rehearsal schedule together and should be able to give that out to you very soon. June rehearsals are also NOT optional. As always, I try to be flexible with vacations and such, but please try to schedule things away from rehearsals. Just a reminder that work is NOT excused.

Please remember that you need to have a binder with plastic sleeves for your music. You must have your music at every rehearsal. Basses you need to highlight your music.

I will go over all of the rules at our first rehearsal.

Important Info

Due to the snow and ice, we are losing a lot of rehearsal time. Having lost this past Thursday rehearsal was bad enough, however, I have been informed that our rehearsal that is scheduled for next Thursday, the 10th is not longer in the gym. A girls basketball game has been rescheduled for that night. We will still have reharsal but it will be all music in the band room. This means that we only have this Sunday, the 6th to put part 3 on! Therefore, we MUST be very effecient and effective with our time.

Next Thursday we will make sure that musically part 3 is ready to go. Then on the day of Kettering we will simply be reviewing and cleaning to try to make part 3 as presentable as possible. YOU MUST MEMORIZE PART 3 NOW!!!

It is also VERY important that we have everyone possible at these couple of rehearsals. If I have already made arrangements with you about missing either of these rehearsals, that is fine. However, for these couple of rehearsals I cannot allow anyone else to miss rehearsal.

Once we get past the Kettering contest, hopefully we will be able to get back to a "normal" rehearsal schedule.

Rehearsal is Cancelled

Due to the roads which are now mostly wet, but will become ice again when the sun goes down, and the fact that the Theatre is having the Winter One Act play tonight we will not have rehearsal.

This means that we only have 1 rehearsal before we perform at Miamisburg!! That is a bit scary, but we will be ok.

It is VERY important that you find some time to practice your music and make sure that you have parts 1 and 2 memorized BEFORE Thursday!

We will NOT have a parents show on Wednesday as we thought. We will do a parents show on Thursday the 27th at about 8:45. So that rehearsal will run a little long. Any parents that are planning on helping move equipment for contests please be at there around 8:30. I want to be able to do a complete run through including entering and exiting the gym. Things are a bit different this year with the electronic equipment so I want to be fully prepared.

I would also like to have that rehearsal start at 6:30 instead of 7:00 so that we can get a little more music rehearsal in and that will help make up for losing 2 rehearsals.

Tarp painting

We will be painting the Tarp at the Avenue on Tues December 28th at 7:00pm. We will need to pick up the tarp at the high school at 6:30pm. I need anyone that is available to help. The more people we have the quicker it will go. We will pick the tarp up on Wednesday the 29th at 8:00am and take the tarp back to the high school. Again I need anyone available to help refold and load the tarp on Wednesday morning.

If you are not out of town these days you really need to be there to help on both days.

I just found out that the National Honor Society is having a ceremony Wednesday night in the auditorium. So... we must cancel rehearsal. I dont think they would like listening to us practice. Also, due to the Choir concert on Thursday night, we will not have rehearsal then either. So rehearsals are cancelled for this week.

Due to the awards being held tonight there will be no rehearsal. I just found out yesterday evening that there was a conflict. The problem is noise more than anything. We ARE Going to Bellbrook

I just recieved word from Dr. Kronour that we are good to go for Bellbrook.

The schedule remains the same as before. We have rehearsal at 10:00am and will leave at 12:30. We perform at 3:09 and should be back at THS by about 5:30.

The interstates are clear and most of the main roads are in good shape. However, some of the backroads may be a bit icy so please be extra careful getting to the school. You will need to leave a few minutes early to make sure that you arrive on time.

Solo and Ensemble Contest Cancelled

According to the OMEA website, solo and ensemble contest has been cancelled tomorrow.

There is still no new info for our drumline contest on Sunday. They have cancelled the show on Saturday at Hamilton however. The guard was scheduled to attend that show.

Game cancelled tonight

If you have not already heard, the basketball game tonight has been cancelled. Senior Night is now on Tuesday. All Seniors need to be at that game.

Tonights game is being rescheduled for Sunday Feb 14th. We will most likely perform at that game. We are scehduled to have rehearsal that day anyway. I will let you know as details come in.

I have not heard anything about solo and ensemble contest yet, or our Bellbrook contest. As soon as I hear something I will post it. Stay tuned and please be VERY careful if you are out driving for any reason.

This is just to remind everyone that the first rehearsal is Tuesday Dec. 1st from 7:00-9:00. We will have rehearsal on Tuesdays and Thursday through Dec 17 from 7:00-9:00. If you are unable to attend a rehearsal, you need to let me know asap.

There has been a change for our mini camp that occurs over Christmas break. On the handout from the meeting, the minicamp was going to be Jan 1and Jan 2, all day both days. However, due to not being able to get the gym, at those times, we will be having a split mini camp. The mini camp is: January 1st from 12:00-9:00 and January 3rd from 8:00-4:00. Please put these dates in your calander now. These are VERY important rehearsals because this is when we learn the majority of drill and the pit learns most of the music. It is much like band camp in those regards. If you have a conflict you need to let me know asap so we can figure out how to handle it.

Winter Drumline/Guard Meeting

Just a reminder that the winter drumline/guard meeting will be this Thursday, October 15, at 6:00pm in the band room. If you are interested in joining please come to the meeting. It is also helpful if you bring a parent to the meeting as well. Also if you know of anyone else that may be interested please have them come to the meeting.

Tuesday Sectionals

Hello All,

Just a reminder that starting this Tuesday,(August 18th) the percussion section will have sectional after full band rehearsal. The sectional with go from 5:00-6:30. This is for battery and pit both. These sectionals are mandatory. If you are going to miss one I need a note as always.
As the season goes on, we may end these early and cancel one now and then. However, you should always plan on having the sectional.

Also, now that school is about to start your schedules are going to become very busy. Make sure that you keep up with your homework. You still have to find time to practice at home as well. Also, while I understand that sometimes you have a lot of homework certain days, homework is NOT an excused reason to miss ANY rehearsal or sectional. Please keep that in mind and learn to budget your time.

A reminder for the battery, you must have the entire show memorized by Wednesday for the County Fair.

Pit schedule changes

The pit only needs to be at the morning block of rehearsal on Wednesday June 17th, 9:00-12:00
The pit only needs to be at the afternoon block on Thursday June 18th, 1:00-3:00. They will get out at 3:00 instead of 4:00 on Thursday like the battery.

The pit does not need to attend rehearsal on Wednesday June 24th.

Battery rehearsal times have not changed.

After June 24th everyone needs to follow the full band schedule. Full band rehearsal starts on Tuesday June 30th. Check your band calendar from that point forward.

Once school starts in August the entire percussion section will have sectionals on Tuesdays after full band rehearsal. There will be more info on that as we get closer to time.

Soaring Sounds

Hello!

If you are planning to attend the Drum Corps Show Soaring Sounds on July 29th, your money needs to be in on next Wednesday, June 10th. Just bring the $20.00 to our rehearsal. This is a great opportunity for you to see some amazing groups. The percussion sections for drum corps are outstanding. Everyone should attend that possibly can. Though it is not mandatory, it is HIGHLY recommended that you be there. Transportation will be provided for you.

Parents welcome at Wednesday Rehearsal

On Wednesday Feb.25, we have rehearsal from 7-9. This rehearsal is also a dress rehearsal. Please wear all parts to your uniform, including the correct undergarments. Guard you do not need to worry about make-up however.

At about 8:15 we are going to get ready to do a complete run through of the show, that includes getting into and how to get out of the gym. I would like to invite all parents to come and watch that run through.

Parents all always welcome to watch rehearsal, but I would really like you to all come and watch this run through. It will give the group the chance to perform in front of an audience before the competition and will do a lot to calm their nerves for this upcoming weekend. You of course may be there for all of rehearsal, but the run through will be around 8:30. So if you arrive around 8:15 you will be sure not to miss anything.

In case you were wondering, the answer is yes we have rehearsal today. Please be careful getting to and from rehearsal as there are some slick spots on the roads. Also be careful when you get to the HS because the parking lot is slick.

I hope you all had a chance to see Matrix either Friday or Saturday. It was a great experience to watch a group of that level and get to listen to the comments that Rob and Kevin(the instructors) were making.

As I mentioned before the Independent World Drumline Matrix is staying at Tipp this weekend for a WGI regional contest. I would like everyone in the Drumline/Guard to see them while they are here. Here is their schedule:

I would like the majority of people to try to show up for the Saturday morning rehearsal at the Middle School. However, if you cannot make it please try to go to one of the other times. You do not need to stay the entire time they practice. When you go, you MUST be respectful at all times. Remember they are rehearsing and trying to get things done and rude behavior will simply NOT be tolerated.

While you are there, pay attention to how they act throughout rehearsal and how they "perform" every time they go over a set or section. Listen to what the instructors tell performers. You will hear many of the same comments that we give you.

(I am going to try to arrange for a meal to be provided at the school on Sunday. Make sure to eat BEFORE you come to rehearsal on the 4th.)

I should have the completed January practice schedule from Mr. Shomper sometime this week. I will post it as soon as I have it.

Contest change:
The contest that we had scheduled for Feb. 14 and Feb15 at Northmont has been cancelled. Therefore we are going to contest on Feb. 28th and March 1st. Feb. 28 is at Lebanon and the March 1st contest is at Bellbrook. Please make that change to your schedules.

Rehearsal Cancelled Tonight

Sorry for the short notice but practice will be cancelled tonight Dec. 2 due to family illness. We will have rehearsal on Thursday night Dec. 4 as scheduled 5-7.

Saturday 13th Times

Percussion needs to meet at the High School between 10:30am-10:45am to clean the instruments. A few people need to bring paper towels and Windex cleaner. All instruments need to be cleaned and ready for rehearsal by 11:15.

Rehearsal will begin at 11:15. We will spend some time doing warm-ups and then stand and play through the music. At about 12:30 we will be on the field marching and playing through the show. We will stop rehearsal at about 1:15 so that you can load all of your instruments on the truck. You will be free to go at 1:30. You need to eat at that time as all students need to be at the Tipp Park by 2:30 to prepare for the contest.

Make sure that you have your music and drill books for rehearsal. Also, battery you need to make sure you have your performance sticks/mallets taped and ready to go before Saturday evening.

Sectional rehearsals

This is just a reminder that starting this Tuesday, the percussion section will have rehearsal immediately following normal band practice. The normal band practice on Tuesdays is 3-5, the percussion section will stay until 6:30. It is probable that most days we will not stay all the way until 6:30, it all depends on what we need to get done and how the sectional goes.

This Tuesday- the 19th- we will be done by 6:00 because it is also open house at Tipp Schools.

On Tuesday the 26th we will NOT have sectionals at all because Troy has its open house and I need to be their with my son. Thus you will be done when the rest of the band is done at 5:00.

Please make sure you are practicing your music on your own. We are starting to fall behind a bit musically as a section because not everyone is keeping up with their music. We started out very strong at band camp, we do not want to fall behind. By this point you should have the first 2 songs memorized. If you do not then you are behind and you need to catch-up NOW!!! Really the whole show should be memorized by now, but I will give you some slack on Night Train for now.

Also, please be aware that there will be some minor changes to the drum feature in Blues in the Night. Nothing major but you need to be prepared.

Band Camp

Just a reminder to keep working on your music. Do not put it away and not look at it until Sunday night at camp.

When you are packing be sure to pack plenty of socks! The ground is often wet in the morning and you do not want to wear nasty stinky socks all day long. Be sure to bring 2 or 3 pairs of shoes for the same reason. You may NOT go barefoot!!!

Also please remember that the percussion section CANNOT drink pop during the day! You may see the rest of the band drinking pop at meals, but that is there problem. You will also see that many people in the band will end up sitting out part of rehearsals because they are sick.

Make sure that you do not forget your music!!

Band camp can be a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of hard work. Please show up to each rehearsal with a good positive attitude. Be willing to work hard and not complain. When we are setting drill I move very fast and I expect to have your full attention the entire time. I will not put up with people being lost and confused as to what we are doing because they failed to pay attention to what is going on. I am more than willing to help everyone as long as everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Ok, so I see that my last several posts have not been showing up. So I hope this one does.

Anyway, our next practice is Wednesday the 18th from 6:30-9:00 as per the schedule.

I am sorry to those who showed up tonight for practice, however, I made the announcement 2 weeks ago that we would not have practice because of Laura's doctors appointment.

The purpose of this blog is to make things easier for communication. However, so far I have made an announcement at least one week, usually two weeks in advance of any change to the schedule at rehearsal. It is YOUR responsibility to remember the changes. Thus you may need to actually use the pencil that you are supposed to have at every rehearsal and write down changes and times.

Again this blog is just a tool to try to make things easier, not absolve you from responsibility to make sure you listen and keep track of what is going on, where you need to be and when you need to be there.

For future reference, if I say that I am going to post something on the blog and you do need see it within a day or so, someone send me an email to let me know it is not up. I do not know why the posts have not been showing up. They show up on my page when I sign in but do not always show up on the page that everyone can view. I do not know why, but I will try to make sure that they do post on there.

Rehearsal ending early

This rehearsal will be simply geared toward preparing for the Strawberry Festival Parade.

New Percussion Instructor

As many of you may know, Sean McGrath has decided not to return for this season as Pit Instructor. He made this decision based upon the basic economics as the situation. He lives in Centerville, drives a full sized van, gas is nearly $4.00 a gallon, and he doesn't get paid enough to pay for all of the gas he has to buy to get here.

Casey Layer will be joining the band staff this year as the Pit Instructor. Casey spent four years on the snare line here at Tipp City and three years as section leader. Casey is a very accomplished young percussionist who worked very hard and consistently passed expectations. Casey is not simply a drummer, he is a percussionist. Through years of lessons and personal study Casey developed his skills as a mallet player as well. Along with spending time with the Pit, Casey will also spend some time with the battery percussion. I am very excited about having Casey join us on staff. His skills as a musician and leader will be a great asset for the percussion section and the band as a whole.

Sorry for the delay of this schedule, but I did not know what my personal work schedule was going to be until very recently. So here is the June Percussion practice schedule. All of these dates and times are for BOTH BATTERY AND PIT Percussion.

Wed. June 11th- 6:30p-9:00p
Mon. June 16th- 7:00p-9:00p
Wed. June 18th- 6:30p-9:00p
Mon. June 23rd- 7:00p-9:00p
Wed. June 25th- 6:30p-9:00p

These rehearsals are MANDATORY!!! If you are going to miss a rehearsal I need a note from a parent ASAP! Because this is a young section overall, it is even more important that everyone show up for rehearsal.

I mentioned this at practice last week, but just a reminder that practice this Wednesday, April 30th will be from 5:00-7:00 NOT 7:30. This is due to the budget meeting for the band boosters.

Also, for my students for Wed. lesson times will be normal even though school lets out early. If you are unable to make it please let me know.

All Rehearsals are MANDATORY!!!! If you need to miss or be late or leave early you MUST give me a note signed by a parent ahead of time. This applies for school sports related events as well. If you have a game on a rehearsal day, I need to know ahead of time, not the day of. Work is NEVER an excused absence!

There will be more information on the two parades at a later time. Listen for times and such from Mr. Parks and Mrs. Marsh.

How to Practice

The biggest problem that young musicians have is knowing how to practice. Practicing is more than just trying to play through a piece of music over and over again. Some people think that every time they play their instrument that they are practicing. That is simply not true!

In order to be effective in your practicing you must know how to practice. A former teacher of mine said, "When you practice you should sound pretty bad." Of course when I heard that I was quite shocked. However, upon further explanation it made perfect sense. Whenever you are practicing the goal should be to improve. That means you must be trying to play the things that you struggle with. Playing things that you can already play may seem more fun but is not going to help you get much better.

When you are going to practice you should have a set a exercises that you go through before you begin to work on a piece of music. The warm-ups that we use are a good starting point. They work on all of the essential techniques that you are going to need to be able to play the parts. You do not need to spend a great deal of time on these, but at least play through them a couple of times. This sets your mind up for the work you are about to do and stretches the appropriate muscles that you need for playing percussion.

Once you have finished the warm-ups, have a plan of what you are going to work on. Pick out the areas of a piece that you struggle with and start there. Work on exactly what gives you trouble and then work out. Make sure that you can get into and out of the trouble spot. Once you have fixed the issue or at least done all you can for that practice session, move on to the next trouble spot and repeat the process. Continue this process until you have worked on all of the areas that you planned to address during that practice session. Once you have done that try to put those sections together and then finally try to play through the music. If after all of that you have time to just play for fun, by all means do it. Playing music is supposed to be fun, but it also takes a lot of work and dedication. Practicing is the only way to get better. As your skills imporve and you can play more complicated music, your confidence rises and playing becomes even more fun.

Practice VS Rehearsal

Often we refer to rehearsal as a practice. The term practice is really used far too often and is miss understood. So what is practice and what is rehearsal?

Practice is something that you do on your own time. You practice by yourself. This is the time that you figure out rhythms and work on the issues that you have with the music.

Rehearsal is something that we do as a group. It is not practice! During a rehearsal we are trying to put all of the individual pieces together to make a cohesive ensemble. We are working on making the music work as a group.

The problem is that far too often individuals show up to rehearsal and have not practiced. Then when we try to rehearse as a group, that individual is actually trying to practice during the rehearsal. This is detrimental to the success of the group. In order for a rehearsal to truly be effective, all of the members must be prepared.

This is in no way saying that you must be able to play everything perfectly before you arrive at rehearsal. However, you must be able to work through the piece and you should have spent a considerable amount of time working on the parts that you struggle with.

Things you need to have at Rehearsal

Always remember to bring everything you need to rehearsal. This includes, but is not limited to:
music(in binder with clear page protectors), pencil, shoes(that you can run and exercise in, no flip-flops), sticks or mallets, a positive attitude, willingness to learn.

Things you need to leave at home:
bad attitude, bad mood, personal problems.

Again this is a partial list. Failure to be prepared for rehearsal will result in your being very unhappy, and the entire line being upset with you.
